Virginia businessman honored by SBA

A Fredericksburg businessman who turned around a document conversion company started by his father in 1976 has been chosen as the Richmond district's SBA Small Business Person of the Year. The owner of ILM Corp. took the company from six employees and, with the help of a small business grant from the SBA, increased the company's business to 29 employees and $2.6 million in sales. He will be honored for growing a business through hard work and wise investments of time and resources.

The company won contracts with federal agencies to provide scanning and indexing services. The owner will be honored at an awards luncheon along with other small business champions including the director of Work It, Richmond, who will be given the SBA Outstanding Advocacy of Small Business Award. This award is given to the person who does the most to help small businesses to succeed in their start-ups or operations.

The SBA believes that small businesses form the heart of the American economy. They will also give awards for the Women in Business Champion, Family-Owned Small Business of the Year, Small Business Exporter of the Year, Veterans Small Business Champion, Financial Services Champion, Minority Small Business Champion and lenders who have assisted businesses with loans.

A business attorney may assist a small business owner in forming a corporation or in handling various legal matters. A business attorney may also assist small business owners in negotiating contracts and buying or selling property or equipment. Business owners may have multiple legal issues that arise as a natural part of running a company and may benefit from the advice and help of a business attorney.
